PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
PLANTING SEEDS OF CHANGE FOR THE FUTURE
Aminta H. Breaux, Ph.D.
President
Creating educational opportunities that change lives is the foundation upon which Bowie State University was founded in 1865. Today, we continue to embrace that legacy as we develop programs focused on meeting the current challenges and opportunities of our time. Bowie State remains a beacon, attracting increasing numbers of students and partners from near and far, while at the same time shining a light and bringing resources to bear on critical needs in our communities. In this annual report we share just a few highlights of the work done by faculty, staff and students during the 2022-23 fiscal year that set the stage for a brighter tomorrow.
INNOVATIONS IN ACADEMICS AND RESEARCH
As a comprehensive university, Bowie State is always doing many things at once. A major focal point has been expanding the scope of our academic offerings to prepare students for the changing workforce. With the infusion of new funds from the Maryland legislature over the next 10 years, we began that process with the creation of 13 new programs aligned with workforce needs and learner demand.
The BSU College of Education continues to do great work preparing the next generation of teachers and counselors to address critical needs in our local school districts.
They build on close relationships with the schools, particularly those in under-resourced communities, bringing new strategies for culturally responsive teaching to improve student outcomes. At the same time faculty also made inroads to bring educational opportunities into a local prison.
A growing research enterprise is taking shape here with projects advancing the latest technologies, to projects exploring the depths of our history. Efforts to help students develop entrepreneurial thinking substantially expanded. All are critically important in creating experiences that develop students infused with intellectual creativity and grounded in historical social understanding.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
On numerous occasions this year, the national media spotlight shined brightly on Bowie State. From visits by national figures including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, to recognition of notable work by faculty and students, the name Bowie State University stretched around the world. At the same time, faculty, staff and students received accolades for their Bowie Bold achievements and contributions to our community of excellence.
PARTNERSHIPS MATTER
Enriching partnerships with corporations, foundations, government agencies and individual supporters are indispensable in securing the long-term viability of Bowie State University.
In addition to expanded scholarships, the impact of their support can be seen across the campus as they show up in person to share their expertise with students and faculty, and provide internships, mentorships and job opportunities within their organizations. Others provide critical infrastructure support to enhance campus facilities and operations.
As you engage with the content throughout this report, take note of the individuals showcased as they are shaping the future of this great university. But know that for each person named, there are many others across the campus working with them and on many other initiatives that are ensuring Bowie State University remains a vital contributor in meeting the educational needs of our state and the nation.
