Bowie State, Borough of Manhattan Community College Forge Historic Transfer Agreement

Bowie State University and the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will open new doors for BMCC graduates seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at Maryland’s first historically Black college or university (HBCU). Effective immediately, this partnership guarantees admission to eligible BMCC students, streamlining their transition to Bowie State while advancing educational equity.

“Bowie State University has established a reputation of providing students with a high-quality education.” - Anthony E. Munroe, Borough of Manhattan Community College President

BMCC, home to over 20,000 students, is nationally recognized for its exceptional impact on advancing minority student achievement. Bowie State University Celebrates Opening of Martin Luther King, Jr. Center

Bowie State University celebrated the opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, a vibrant environment for learning and creativity designed to inspire students to harness the power of their voice and free expression to shape the future.

State and local officials, university leaders and project partners gathered to cut the ribbon and officially open the $166 million, 192,000 square foot center that will serve every BSU student. It will be home to the Departments of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies; History and Government; Communications and Military Science.

Dr. King’s own words will be a constant inspiration for students in the building. Abstract impressions of vocal sound waves from his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize speech are incorporated into the design of the façade and interior finishing of the main entrances echoing his call to have “the courage to face the uncertainties of the future.” With a focus on visibility, connectivity and storytelling, the design of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center expresses the power of voice and community.

“Every student receiving a BSU education will pass through this building at some point in their curriculum,” said President Aminta H. Breaux. “The cutting-edge tools and resources found here will elevate instruction of the liberal arts and enable students to find their own voice and develop skills to navigate real-world challenges in their future careers.”

Governor Moore Appoints Bowie State Educator to Maryland State Board of Education

Xiomara V. Medina, associate director for clinical training in the Department of Counseling & Psychological Studies at Bowie State University, has been appointed to the Maryland State Board of Education by Governor Wes Moore.

The Maryland State Board of Education approves regulations and sets educational policy to ensure a rigorous and world-class educational experience for every Maryland student. It sets standards for pre-kindergarten through high school and vocational rehabilitation services. The board also approves budget allocations for the Department of Education headquarters, state aid to local education, and state-aided institutions before they are sent to the Maryland General Assembly and Governor Moore.

“Being appointed to the State Board of Education provides me the opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless and champion educational policies for the underrepresented,” said Medina. “Too many times we see policies being implemented without people knowing what’s going on in the classroom. My goal is to ensure that when policies are discussed, what occurs in the classroom is the focal point.”

A new club to encourage Black men on campus to become leaders has been launched by Zaire Bond, a sophomore majoring in education with a history concentration. The Black Male Educators and Leaders Alliance is open to all undergraduate and graduate students regardless of an individual’s major.

“The focus of the club is on leadership and education,” said Bond. “We want to provide the necessary tools for young Black men to become leaders, which means providing positive input and reinforcement such as peer mentoring.”

Bond is among 17 Black male students who are now attending Bowie State to earn their degrees in education through the four-year $1.5 million Augustus F. Hawkins grant awarded to the university by the Department of Education in 2023 to support the Black Male Teachers program.

“You don’t have to be a teacher to be an educator,” said Bond. “I want the Black Male Educators and Leadership Alliance to be known as an organization that provides all students the necessary tools to become leaders and positive reinforcement for Black men.”

From Bowie State to the Big Leagues: Alumnus Jason Beckwith’s Journey to the Washington Nationals

When Jason Beckwith steps into his role as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the Washington Nationals, he does so with quiet strength, focused intention, and a life shaped by conviction and character. His story is one of transformation, not just professionally but personally. At the heart of that journey is his experience at Bowie State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Beckwith’s path to Bowie State was shaped by community influence and a search for belonging. Raised in Germantown, Maryland, after being adopted as a child, he grew up in an environment where education and faith were foundational. After initially enrolling elsewhere, he transferred to Bowie State and quickly found the sense of home and affirmation he had been missing. That welcoming environment, rooted in long-standing values of community and support, became central to his personal and professional development.

“The values the university was founded on — community, inclusion, support — those haven’t changed in more than 160 years…What I learned at Bowie made me resourceful. I had learned to be agile, to thrive with less and to turn challenges into opportunities.” - Jason Beckwith, Washington Nationals Senior Vice President of Human Resources

Academically, Bowie State challenged Beckwith to sharpen his thinking and raise his standards. A demanding economics professor left a lasting imprint, not only through rigorous coursework but by instilling discipline, focus, and critical analysis. Those lessons followed Beckwith into the workforce, where he began his career in recruiting and later entered a competitive leadership program at Lockheed Martin. Despite initial self-doubt among peers from elite institutions, Beckwith recognized that Bowie had equipped him with adaptability, resilience, and grit—qualities that allowed him to thrive and stand out in high-pressure environments.
