An Update on BSU BOLD: The Campaign for Excellence
Bowie State University extends its sincere gratitude to the many alumni, friends, partners and supporters who have contributed to the BSU Bold: The Campaign for Excellence fundraising campaign.
In Fiscal Year 2025, institutions nationwide navigated a complex philanthropic landscape shaped by economic uncertainty, evolving donor priorities and increased competition for charitable dollars. For 160 years, Bowie State has championed access to higher education and advanced opportunities for our students.
University endowments play a critical role in ensuring long-term financial stability and institutional excellence. For Bowie State University, endowment support is especially vital in expanding access to education through student scholarships, supporting academic programs and sustaining initiatives that enhance the overall student experience. At the end of FY 2025, Bowie State’s endowment had grown to $47,477,862. Between 2019 and 2025, BSU’s endowment grew by approximately 493%, increasing from $8 million to $47.5 million.
Contributions made today create lasting impact, providing dependable funding that supports current and future students while strengthening the university for generations to come.
Through BSU BOLD: The Campaign for Excellence, donors have continued to demonstrate their belief in Bowie State’s mission and future. By June 30, 2025, the campaign raised $68,044,532, advancing the university’s efforts to grow its endowment and support students in meaningful ways. The campaign’s early success resulted in Bowie State increasing their fundraising goal from $50 million to $75 million, with the campaign ending on December 31, 2025.

Bowie State University is grateful for the generosity of FY25 donors, including $437,500 from the Tides Network, $150,000 from Laika Stop Motion Animation Studio and $25,250 from Dr. Karen Cook-Bell and Mr. Clarence Bell, Sr., among many others whose contributions have helped propel the campaign forward.
As the university looks ahead, continued philanthropic support will be essential to meeting the evolving needs of our students and sustaining the momentum of BSU BOLD: The Campaign for Excellence. Every gift — large or small — plays a role in opening doors, easing financial burdens and ensuring that Bowie State University remains a place where excellence is accessible and achievement is within reach.
Make your gift today and help drive Bowie State University forward, strengthening our endowment, expanding scholarships and opening doors for students.
“For 160 years, Bowie State has championed access to higher education and expanded opportunities for our students. Our BSU Bold: The Campaign for Excellence fundraising campaign significantly strengthens our ability to close financial gaps, increase access to scholarships and ensure the university’s long-term stability.”
– Dr. Aminta H. Breaux Bowie State University President

The McMillan-Stewart Foundation Invests $300,000 in Bowie State
The McMillan-Stewart Foundation has invested $300,000 in Bowie State University to establish an endowed scholarship in honor of the late Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings to provide financial support to Bowie State students.
“The McMillan-Stewart Foundation seeks to realize the vision of its founder, Genevieve McMillan, who supported the arts as a vehicle for understanding the diversity of human experience and believed that we should work for equality and justice for all,” said Kibebe Gizaw, president of the foundation. “Congressman Elijah Cummings shared these same virtues which is why we made an investment in Bowie State in his honor.”

Wellpoint Fuels Bowie State University’s Nutrition Lounge with Vital Support
Bowie State University has welcomed a generous $10,000 donation from health insurance giant Wellpoint, a lifeline aimed at bolstering the university’s Nutrition Lounge. This infusion of funds will stock the pantry with wholesome food, serving as a nourishing boost for students who are experiencing food insecurity on campus.

Masons Donate $2,500 to Bowie State University During Their Bicentennial Celebration
Bowie State University received a $2,500 donation from the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland Masons during the fraternity’s 200th anniversary celebration, recognizing the organization’s enduring commitment to leadership, scholarship and community service in the Black community and among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Bowie State Alumna Builds Career Rooted in Leadership and Service
Bowie State University alumna Stephanie Hill credits her undergraduate experience as the foundation of her professional success and lifelong commitment to leadership and service.
Hill began her studies at Bowie State in 2002 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations in 2006. As a student, she was actively engaged in campus life and student leadership, serving as Miss Junior and Miss Essence, titles held within the Student Government Association.
Her involvement extended across the university, including participation in the Circle K community service organization, the New Student Orientation mentorship program, the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs student ambassador initiative, and the Bowie State Honors Program. Hill said those experiences helped shape her passion for leadership, mentorship and service

Bowie State Alumnus Continues Legacy of Bulldog Pride and Service
Jeris Bowlding, a Bowie State University alumnus and member of a multigenerational Bulldog family, continues to honor his legacy through service, mentorship and support of student-athletes.
Bowlding began his academic journey at Bowie State in 2002 and earned bachelor’s in Computer Technology in 2007. During his time at the university, he was actively involved in student leadership and served as Mr. Junior from 2005 to 2006.
Following graduation, Bowlding founded Excel Golf, a nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing youth to the game of golf and expanding access to the sport. His work has had a direct impact on Bowie State athletics, as he played a key role in supporting the launch of the university’s golf program. Two current Bowie State golfers, Whitley Shields and Johnathan Fletcher, previously participated in Excel Golf camps and clinics before joining the Bulldogs.
Bowlding remains committed to giving back to his alma mater. Excel Golf is expected to partner with Bowie State’s Office of Alumni Engagement and Stewardship to host a golf clinic exclusively for the alumni community, further reflecting his continued support of the university and its students.
Through his professional and philanthropic efforts, Bowlding exemplifies Bulldog pride across three generations while strengthening opportunities for future Bowie State students.

Bowie State Receives $50,000 Endowment Gift to Support Future Students
Bowie State University received a $50,000 gift in 2025 from Audrey Shadd, a veteran, nurse, anesthesiologist and attorney whose career reflects a lifelong commitment to service and education.
Shadd established the Audrey Shadd Endowment to support Bowie State students as they pursue their academic and professional goals. Inspired by her mother’s advice to always give back, Shadd said the endowment is intended to create lasting opportunities for future generations.
A strong advocate for historically Black colleges and universities, Shadd also established an endowment at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Her philanthropy reflects her belief that education is the foundation for progress, a principle that has guided her own success across multiple professions and military service
“Education is the gateway to opportunity. Seize it, use it and share it for the betterment of the world community.” - Albertina Lane, Department of Language, Literature & Cultural Studies Professor
Bowie State University is grateful for Shadd’s generosity, as the endowment will have a lasting impact on Bowie State students for years to come.
